The flu and cold are both contagious respiratory illnesses, but the flu is usually more severe, with sudden onset, high fever, body aches, and extreme fatigue, while colds develop gradually with milder symptoms like sneezing, stuffy nose, and sore throat, rarely causing fever.  Colds are caused by many viruses, whereas the flu is caused by influenza viruses, and while both need rest and fluids, the flu might require antiviral drugs early on and prevention includes yearly flu shots and good hygiene.
