Natural radiation comprises cosmic radiation and the radiation arising from the decay of naturally occurring radionuclides.  The natural radionuclides include the primordial radioactive elements in the earth's crust, their radioactive decay products, and radionuclides produced by cosmic-radiation interactions.

Artificial radiation (man made) comes from activities like medical imaging (X-rays, CT scans), consumer products (smoke detectors, some ceramics, luminous dials), industrial uses, nuclear power, and fallout from past nuclear weapons testing or accidents, with medical procedures being the largest contributor to the average person's exposure, far exceeding nuclear power or weapons. These sources introduce artificial radioactive materials or generate radiation via machines, adding to natural background radiation.
