Herpes is a common viral infection, usually from herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 or HSV-2), causing painful, fluid-filled blisters (cold sores around the mouth or genital sores).  It's transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact with sores, saliva, or fluids, often without symptoms, and is lifelong, recurring in outbreaks with tingling/itching before sores appear. While there's no cure, antiviral medications can manage symptoms, with HSV-1 often causing oral herpes and HSV-2 typically causing genital herpes, though they can cross over.
